Thu 6 Mar. 610 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, 60605. 312-322-1700. Spertus College - [email][events]

on Post-Jewish Themes in Modern American HistoryThursday, March 6 at 6 pm Tickets: $8 | $5 for students and Spertus members Call 312.322.1773. In conjunction with Spertus Museum's inaugural exhibition The New Authentics: Artists of the Post-Jewish Generation, David A. Hollinger, one of the United States' foremost intellectual historians will address a variety of episodes in modern U.S. history to which the concept of post-Jewishness can be applied. Hollinger has been called "a historian who can help us understand where we are going" (K. Anthony Appiah) and his writings have been called "the most perceptive and farsighted discussion of multiculturalism" (Richard Rorty).

He will explore the emergence of the postethnic era, a cultural climate in which individuals can appreciate and critically engage in ideas and practices that owe much to specific religious and ethnic groups, but are no longer confined by them.

David A. Hollinger is Preston Hotchkis Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. His recent books include Postethnic America: Beyond Multiculturalism, Cosmopolitanism and Solidarity, and Science, Jews, and Secular Culture. He is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and was formerly Harmsworth Professor of American History at the University of Oxford.
