One of the continent's superpowers, South Africa possesses a multitude of ethnic groups and languages that comprise a rich culture. While it successfully weathered the transition from apartheid to a democratic constitution, issues of economic and educational inequality remain. South Africa's contemporary visual arts industry is booming, and it has produced two Nobel Prize winners in literature, and notables Nelson Mandela, Christian Barnard and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
