Working from architectonic references Julie Mehretu creates abstract paintings and drawings, whose multiple overlays of information result in graphically stunning illusions of movement in space. The recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2005, Mehretu has been the subject of numerous one-person and group exhibitions at venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
