Please join Mosaic Outdoor Club of Greater Los Angeles and Nexus for an "urban" hike, in the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. Upper Newport Bay is an estuary - a place where fresh and salt water meet and mix. It is one of only a few remaining estuaries in Southern California and is the home of nearly 200 species of birds, including several endangered species, as well as numerous species of mammals, fish, other critters and native plants. The varied habitats include open waters, salt marshes, mud flats, dunes, sandy beaches, bluffs, riparian woodlands, and ponds.
There are no Restrooms at the trail head but there are port-o-johns about 3/4 of mile in.
This is an easy but fast paced 7 miles round trip “urban” hike on fairly level (100-200 ft. +/-), paved ground; this hike is suitable for energetic, fit beginners!
PLEASE NO TURTLES, NO TIGERS! We want to get some exercise but at the same time, not die in the process!
We will hike 3.5 miles to Shirley's Bagels for a late Breakfast/early lunch and after we get re-energized we'll walk back along the same path. For those with extra energy, we can add more miles to it on the way back :)

HIKE MEETING PLACE: San Joaquin Hills Rd and Back Bay Dr., Newport Beach, CA 92660
HIKE START TIME: Meet at 10:00 AM; leave at 10:15 AM SHARP!!
HIKE END TIME: Approximately 2:00 PM
BRING: Water (two liters recommended), hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a snack to share, and a jacket, sweater or windbreaker, as it may get cool, and/or windy. PLEASE be advised that most ot the hike is exposed (hardly ANY shade) so be sure to bring enough water and dress appropriately.
FOOTWARE: Walking, comfortable shoes but no flip flops or high heels.

From the Valley, West LA, Long Beach, West and Central Orange County:
Take I-405 SOUTH toward SAN DIEGO
Take the CA-73 SOUTH exit toward SAN DIEGO VIA TOLL RD. The highway connector from I-405 has a common stretch for both CA-73 and CA-55 and after about a mile they split. DO NOT GET ON CA-55 SOUTH!!!!! STAY ON CA-73 (you do NOT have to pay ANY Toll, as you get off BEFORE it becomes a Toll Rd) - go 2.9 mi
Take exit #15 onto BRISTOL ST toward JAMBOREE RD - go 0.6 mi
Turn RIGHT on JAMBOREE RD - go 2.3 mi
Turn RIGHT on SAN JOAQUIN HILLS RD - go 0.2 mi
Take SAN JOAQUIN HILLS RD until it dead ends in Back Bay Dr. and park anywhere.
From South Orange County
Take I-405 NORTH
Take exit #7/JAMBOREE RD - go 0.3 mi
Turn LEFT on JAMBOREE RD - go 4.3 mi
Turn RIGHT on SAN JOAQUIN HILLS RD - go 0.2 mi
Take SAN JOAQUIN HILLS RD until it dead ends in Back Bay Dr. and park anywhere.

CARPOOL POINTS:
We will carpool from the West side, the Valley and Orange County (See below).
West LA Carpool
We will carpool from Trader Joe's - 10850 National Boulevard (at Westwood). There is plenty of parking on the side streets - do not park in the Trader Joe's lot. Meet in the upper Trader Joe's lot at 8:45 AM and leave at 9:00 AM SHARP! According to Google Maps, it is 46.9 mi, and it will take about 50 mins. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic or Nexus representatives.
Valley Carpool
We will meet in Sherman Oaks, 15410 Ventura Blvd, at the Union 76 Gas Station across from Marriot Courtyard Hotel (on Ventura Blvd. just west of the 405 Fwy.). Meet at 8:30 AM and leave at 8:45 AM SHARP! According to Google Maps, it is 56.4 mi and it will take about 59 mins. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic or Nexus representatives.
Long Beach/West Orange County Carpool
We will carpool from BEHIND CVS Pharmacy (formerly SavOn Drugs) - 12490 Seal Beach Blvd Seal Beach, CA 90740-2711 (at Saint Cloud). There is plenty of parking BETWEEN the CVS Pharmacy and the Ralph's. There is a Starbuck's and various other restaurants and stores such as ZPizza, Togo's, Island's, Target, etc. in the same parking lot. Meet in the parking lot behind the CVS Pharmacy at 9:15 AM and leave at 9:30 AM SHARP! According to Google Maps, it is 17.1 mi and it will take about 23 mins. PLEASE NOTE: Be prepared to form your own carpools if there are no Mosaic or Nexus representatives.
