Saturday, June 6, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m., or Saturday, July 11, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. NOTE: This course will be posted on the Otis College of Art and Design website by Tuesday, March 31. Registration for this class occurs directly with Otis College; however, the class takes place at the Skirball.

Ancient jewelry-making techniques converge with new millennium technology through Precious Metal Clay (PMC). This malleable material, consisting of fine silver particles suspended in an organic binder and water, can be formed like earthen clay. When fired in a kiln, it fuses, or "sinters," to become a 99.9%-pure silver object. In this one-day intensive class, students will begin to master PMC as they learn how to texture, set gems, roll coils, form custom bails, re-hydrate dry material, and use a butane torch to fire creations made at home. Students will create an original pair of earring drops and a pendant. The course also covers various finishing methods including wire brushing, burnishing, and patinas. No experience necessary.

Instructor: Lora Hart has been certified by metal clay programs including PMC Connection, Rio Rewards, and Art Clay Silver. She is one of the founding directors of New Metal Artists, the Los Angeles Chapter of the PMC Guild. Her work has been exhibited in galleries around the Southland.
