When: Sunday, Aug 9, 2009, 8:45 AM Where: Oleta River State Park What: Come and kayak through the pristine mangrove forest in your own single kayak or partner up in a tandem. It’s a nice peaceful paddle where you can see a large variety of water birds and sometimes dolphin and manatee.
The hawks, red-bellied woodpeckers, vireos, warblers and other migrating birds have arrived for the birders to enjoy. We will rent the kayaks for 4 hours and paddle to an off island where we can swim and/or snorkel for a bit and have a snack before returning to the outfitter. Afterwards, if you wish to stay and hangout at the beach with a picnic lunch or call it a day, it's up to you. This is an easy to intermediate paddle. Beginners welcome.
Where: Blue Moon Outdoor Center at Oleta River State Recreation Area, 3400 N.E. 163rd St, North Miami, Florida 33160, (305) 957-3040 off I–95 in Miami. Phone: 305-919-1844.
Directions: From the south: Take I-95 to SR 826 east toward Miami Beach. Go several miles, continuing past Biscayne Blvd (US 1) for about a half mile and turn right into the park. Meet next to the bike/kayak rental shack.
From the north: Take I-95 to Miami Gardens Drive. Go east to Biscayne Blvd (US 1) and turn right. At 826 turn left and go about a half mile and turn right into the park. Meet next to the bike/kayak rental shack.
Bring: 2 liters of water, a light snack for energy, waterproof sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses with cord, paddling gloves (optional), a dry bag (optional), bathing suit, old sneakers or boat shoes, a lunch, towel, umbrella (optional), appropriate light weight clothing to shield from sun.
Reminder: Wear your Mosaic t-shirt to all Mosaic events. At one random event each month, participants wearing a Mosaic t-shirt will receive a $3 discount on the event.
Cost: For single kayak - $30.00 for Mosaic members, $35.00 for non-members
For tandem kayaks (per person) - $25.00 for Mosaic members, $30 for non-members
