Rio Grande by John Ford (1950, 105 min.). The third installment of Ford’s “Cavalry Trilogy,” Rio Grande brings back John Wayne as Lieutenant Colonel Kirby York, now middle-aged and embittered from his post on the Texas frontier. When his teenage son arrives at the post, York is exceedingly hard on the soldier, which only makes the younger York more willing to stand any test. York’s estranged wife, played by Maureen O’Hara in the first of their many films together, arrives to retrieve her son, who refuses to leave his post. Tensions mount as York and his wife rekindle their romance, and he is ordered to cross the Rio Grande into Mexico in pursuit of an Apache threat. Members, seniors, and students $8; general admission $10
