Arguably the best American composer of any style, the Duke split duties his entire career, alternating gracefully between legendary bandleader and forward-looking composer. Starting in the 1920s and moving through six decades, Duke tackled the long form jazz composition, appeared in numerous films, dominated the jazz airwaves, sold millions of records and maintained the longest running big band in the history of jazz – all guided by compositional gift that in many ways defined modern jazz. In our final Discover Jazz class, Duke Ellington’s mastery as a composer and bandleader will illustrate his significance as the preeminent jazz composer of any era.
