His People

Sat 5 Apr. 4126 Executive Drive, La Jolla, 92037. Mike Cohen, Executive Director, 858.457.3030. Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center - [email][events]

The biggest event in festival history Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see His People, a classic 1925 silent film, fully restored by the National Center for Jewish Film at Brandeis University, at the fully restored Balboa Theatre at Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego. A melodrama in Yiddish Theatre tradition, His People is the story of two sons of a poor Russian-Jewish pushcart peddler on New York’s Lower East Side. Morris is a good student and the apple of his father’s eye, while Sammy is the black sheep of the family. But not all is as it seems.

Sammy secretly becomes a boxer to pay for Morris’s law school, while Morris rejects his poor, uneducated family. Will the father realize that Morris is a no-goodnik? Will he accept Sammy as a boxer with an eye for an Irish girl? Will the family stay together or be torn apart? Will Sammy be knocked out in the third round? Oy Gevalt!

His People is accompanied by musician and composer Paul Shapiro and his live, six-piece jazz band with Mr. Shapiro’s original score commissioned by the Museum of Jewish Heritage.
