The Political Legacy of One Tough Broad from the Bronx Suzanne Braun Levine, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, Scott Stringer and Mary Thom For more than 50 years, activist, congresswoman and leader Bella Abzug championed the powerless and disenfranchised in every major social initiative of her time, from the Zionism and labor movements of the ’40s through the environmental and economic equality movements of the ’90s.
Suzanne Braun Levine and Mary Thom, experts on women’s issues, discuss this remarkable woman in their book Bella Abzug: How One Tough Broad from the Bronx Fought Jim Crow and Joe McCarthy, Pissed Off Jimmy Carter, Battled for the Rights of Women and Workers, Rallied Against War and for the Planet, and Shook Up Politics Along the Way. Levine is the author of Inventing the Rest of Our Lives and Thom is the author of Inside Ms.
Scott Stringer is Borough President of Manhattan and campaigned for his cousin Bella in his youth. Letty Cottin Pogrebin is a founding editor of Ms. magazine and the author of nine books, including Deborah, Golda, And Me, a memoir, and most recently a novel, Three Daughters.
