From Hobbits and Narnians to Harry Potter Tolkien’s Middle Earth Consider the development of epic literature in England’s medieval period, and learn how it fits within the broader history of the Western Epic tradition. Explore worlds of richness and invention found in works by J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Study Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy, and then move on to Lewis’s seven-part Chronicles of Narnia and, more briefly, his three-part Space Trilogy. The last session focuses on J.K. Rowling’s seven-part Harry Potter series and the question of how it fits into the grand sweep of history of the Anglo-Saxon epic. The epic hero and his quest, from Bilbo to Frodo and their forebears.
