Thursday 11 September 2008
Thu 11 Sep to Tue 23 Sep. 1109 Fifth Avenue, New York, 10128. Alex Wittenberg, 212-423-3271. Jewish Museum - [email][events]
The Jewish Museum and the American Friends of the Jewish Museum of Greece are joining to present a trip exploring one of the oldest Jewish settlements in the world. This coming September (the best time of year to visit the region), we will learn about the two separate groups of Greek Jews: the Romaniote, who migrated from ancient Israel—and the Sephardim, who fled Spain and Portugal during the Inquisition to find a new home when Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire.
Additionally, of course, we will visit and see important monuments of classical antiquity (including the Acropolis and its new museum); the island of Aegina (a day’s journey from Athens); mythical Mount Olympus; ancient temples (including Delphi—where we will spend a night) and Vergina—site of the Royal Tombs of Philip of Macedon. Accommodations throughout will be at Greece’s finest hotels—including the world-class Hotel Grand Bretagne in Athens, and the Electra Palace Hotel overlooking the bay, in Thessaloniki.
Led by Aryeh Maidenbaum, and accompanied by expert, English speaking guides, we will hear presentations by local scholars, enjoy wonderful cuisine and fine museums, and experience Greece’s breathtaking countryside. We invite you to travel with us on this very special journey!
