Thursdays, March 5, 12, 19, & 26 from 12 noon—1:30 pm This course examines the major movements within American Judaism: Reform, Conservative/Reconstructionist, Orthodox/Hasidism, and secular Jews. We will briefly examine their history in Europe and America, and compare their images and goals for American Jews and Judaism. We will address and compare their views on Americanization, Israel, Torah/revelation, God, gender roles, and Jewish law.

Dr. Gary Porton is the Sarah and Charles Drobny Professor of Talmudic Studies and Judaism at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He received his BA in History from UCLA, his MA in Judaic Studies from HUC-JIR, and his PhD from Brown University.

$150 | $125 for Spertus members
