Measuring about a quarter of the size of the United States, Sudan is the largest country in Africa. In ancient times the kingdom of Nubia conquered Egypt, and Muslim Arabs eventually controlled the area, replacing Christianity with Islam. Differences in language, religion, ethnicity and political power have caused a great deal of instability and turmoil.
