Julia Hartwig, "the grande dame of Polish poetry," according to Czes³aw Mi³osz, has published more than a dozen collections; In Praise of the Unfinished: Selected Poems is the first to be translated into English. Charles Simic, recent Poet Laureate, is the author of 19 books of poetry, including The World Doesn’t End, winner of the Pulitzer Prize; Walking the Black Cat; The Voice at 3:00 A.M.; and That Little Something. Simic's "writing comes dancing out on the balls of its feet, colloquially fit as a fiddle, a sparring partner for the world," wrote Seamus Heaney.
Due to illness, Polish poet Julia Hartwig—scheduled to appear both as a part of the Critics and Brunch series on March 1 and for a reading on March 2—will be unable to attend. As a result, the Sunday, March 1 event is cancelled. The reading on Monday, March 2, however, will go forward as planned, with poet Charles Simic appearing solo.
Please note: To honor Ms. Hartwig in her absence, Mr. Simic will be reading, in addition to his own work, a selection of her poems on the evening of March 2.
Refunds to single-ticket holders for the March 1 event will be processed automatically by the Y's box office. For single-ticket holders to the March 2 event looking for a refund, please call Y-charge at 212.415.5500.
We apologize for this inconvenience and hope to see you again soon at a future reading.
