Through his work as painter, photographer, sculptor, object maker, and poet, Man Ray recast the concept of artistic identity. As a complex figure who needed to be anonymous yet not blend in with the crowd, Man Ray was caught in an ongoing process of concealment and self-assertion. This lecture, by exhibition curator Mason Klein, will address how this conundrum became a critical part of Man Ray’s work. Klein argues this contradiction informed the ways in which Man Ray was able to use his art to reconcile his alienation as a Jew from a Russian immigrant family, for he managed to be at once assimilated and an outcast.
