March 10 — June 27 Join us for a free Artist Talk with Jan Tichy on Sunday, March 14 at 1 pm Ground Level Projects is a series of artist commissions for Spertus’ glass-enclosed, street-level vestibule. The project, which is visible from the street, aims to foster creative encounters that investigate, challenge, and expand traditional perceptions of the Jewish experience. Admission is free.
Jan Tichy, installation no. 6 (tubes), 2009,
video installation with 200 paper objects, adhesive, sand bags, and sound.
Jan Tichy’s installations address the multi-layered narratives of urban spaces and architectural contexts. Using light as his medium, his site-specific commission will animate the ground floor vestibule. His minimalist approach leaves his works open to interpretation, focusing attention on the impact of his materials to transform our experience.
Jan Tichy was born in Prague. He studied at Hebrew University, Musrara School of Photography and New Media, and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel and completed his MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work was included in Israel’s Pavilion at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale. He recently completed a project at Mies van der Rohe’s Crown Hall at IIT and a solo exhibition at Richard Gray Gallery.
This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Related programming supported by Denis Weil in memory of Jacqueline Weil-Bloch.
Spertus Museum exhibitions are supported in part by a CityArts Program 4 Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the Harry and Sadie Lasky Foundation, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
