Sullivan’s Travels by Preston Sturges (1941, 94 min.). John Sullivan (John McCrea), a spoiled and successful director, wants to make the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, highlighting the struggle of the poor. (In 2002 Joel and Ethan Coen paid tribute to Sturges with their own film of the same name). Because he knows nothing about poverty, he sets off on a trip as a hobo joined by an aspiring actress know only as The Girl (Veronica Lake). In his attempt to succeed, he lands himself in a prison work camp. A movie whose tone shifts from comedy to drama and back again, Sullivan’s Travels is an American comedy classic. members, seniors, and students $8; general admission $10
