A Tribute to Oscar Peterson Featuring Marian Petrescu & Andreas Oberg As part of the 6th Annual DC Jazz Festival Date: Tuesday, June 08, 2010 Time: 8:00 PM With a dazzling keyboard command and a seemingly unlimited wellspring of musical ideas, Romanian keyboard giant Marian Petrescu has risen the pianistic bar. “When I was eight years-old, I heard Oscar Peterson on TV,” Petrescu says. “I was so impressed, and at once I knew: This is what I want. This is what I will try to do. And I had to try very hard, because Oscar had that unbelievable musical level. Swedish guitarist Andreas Öberg is quickly becoming one of the most admired jazz guitar players on the planet. Don Heckman, writing in the Los Angeles Times, has noted that "Öberg has mastered everything from bebop and swing to bossa nova, Gypsy jazz and fusion, enhanced with youthful, rock-driven vigor. His playing is at times an astonishing display of virtuosity."
Both artists have played with and learned from some of the greatest musicians of our generation and are firm believers in the power of education. Petrescu teaches both classical and jazz at his own music school in Finland, while Oberg has written multiple books on jazz guitar instruction.
It’s only natural that Petrescu and Oberg contributed to the Grammy Award-winning 2009 CD, “Resonance Big Band Pays Tribute to Oscar Peterson.” Come see the jazz duo light up the stage in a DC Jazz Festical feature performance - a tribute to the great Oscar Peterson.
