North Shore Community Kallah A Community-Wide Adult Jewish Education Program Tuesdays, February 8, 15, and 22 This program takes place at North Shore Congregation Israel 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe In partnership with the North Shore Chavurah of Rabbis, Spertus is proud to co-sponsor this year’s Kallah, a series of free Jewish adult education courses that take place over three consecutive Tuesday evenings in February on Chicago’s North Shore.
Each evening is comprised of two one-hour course slots with a 15-minute dessert and coffee break between them. Each Kallah class runs over the three consecutive weeks, during either the early (7 pm) or late (8:15 pm) session slots. Participants can choose to attend an early or late course series selection, or both.
Early Session 7 pm–8 pm
Dessert and Coffee Break 8 pm–8:15 pm
Late Session 8:15 pm–9:15 pm
The 7 pm courses will be taught by esteemed members of the Spertus faculty.
Selected rabbis from a community of 10 congregations will teach the 8:15 pm courses. Course selections will be available on the North Shore Congregation Israel’s website at NSCI.org after December 1.

Dr. Byron Sherwin on The Legend of the Golem and Biotechnology

Dr. Byron L. Sherwin, Spertus Distinguished Service Professor and Director of Doctoral Studies, is an internationally renowned theologian, ethicist, and scholar of Jewish philosophy. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago and his Rabbinical Ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. The many books he has authored include Golems Among Us: How a Jewish Legend Can Help Us Navigate the Biotech Century.
Dr. Claire Sufrin on The Role of History in Modern Judaism

Dr. Claire Sufrin holds a PhD in Religious Studies from Stanford University, with a specialization in modern Jewish thought. Before her recent move to the Chicago area, Dr. Sufrin taught at Northeastern University in Boston. Her current research focuses on Martin Buber, contemporary concepts of halakhah (Jewish law), and the relationship between religion and literature. She is an adjunct member of the Spertus faculty.

Dragons in Jewish Literature and Art: Divine or Demonic?

Dr. Marc Michael Epstein is Professor of Religion and Jewish Studies at Vassar and an adjunct member of the Spertus faculty. He received his PhD from Yale University. He has written on various topics in visual and material culture produced by, for, and about Jews, most notably in his first book, Dreams of Subversion in Medieval Jewish Art and Literature.
