Once pronounced “the pope of trash” by William S. Burroughs, John Waters made his name with a series of spectacular (and sometimes spectacularly gross) films, including the cult classics Hairspray, Cry Baby, Pink Flamingos and Cecil B. Demented. His new book, Role Models, describes shopping for secondhand clothes at Hadassah with the drag queen Divine, and explains the connection between his own iconic mustache and Che Guevara’s beret. Waters presents humanity at its most ridiculous and makes that funny rather than repellent. To quote his ancestor W.C. Fields, “It’s a gift.”
