In 1774, the Swedish Parliament changed the law that had prohibited non-Protestants from settling in Sweden for the sake of one Jew: Aaron Isaac. In 1944, Raoul Wallenberg saved thousands of Jews in Budapest under the nose of Eichmann; in 1943, Danish Jews were rescued by fellow Danes and smuggled to Sweden; and Finland refused to hand over its Jews even as Finish Jews fought as allies with the Wehrmacht. How do you celebrate Shabbat when the sun sets in summer at 10:45 pm or at 2:30 pm in winter?
Why do some Swedes believe that Jewish women receive a goat when they are divorced? Why is kosher slaughter forbidden in Sweden and why is there a debate about circumcision? Join Rabbi Ute Steyer who worked for ten years Stockholm and learn about the little known, amazing, sometimes eccentric history of Scandinavian Jews.
Please note that due to the presenter's schedule the dates of the course have been changed. It is now a 3 session course instead of four sessions but the total classroom time is the same - 6 hours. Sorry for any inconvenience.
