Unlikely Collaboration: Gertrude Stein, Bernard Faÿ, and the Vichy Dilemma (Columbia University Press, 2011) Author Barbara Will, Dartmouth College, in conversation with Ruth Franklin, senior editor, The New Republic In 1941, Gertrude Stein, at the urging of Bernard Faÿ, then director of the Bibliothèque Nationale, began translating into English the speeches of Marshal Philippe Pétain, head of the collaborationist Vichy regime. In her new book, Will examines what led the avant-garde icon to embark on such a project. $10, $5 members
