According to the Anti-Defamation League, one of the most damaging and lasting anti-Semitic myths involves the relationship between Jews and money. For millennia Jews have been stereotyped as money-grubbing, usurious, and rich. Where we claim Einstein, Marx, and Freud, others see Shylock, Fagin, and Bernie Madoff. There have always been plenty of poor Jews, of course, but it is also true that as an ethnic group, Jews in the U.S. have done exceptionally well financially. Are we proud of this success, or a bit embarrassed? How do these issues play out in our real lives? Some of us grew up rich, some poor, many in between.
