Geraldine Ferraro, Mariel Hemingway, Hope Edelman, and Allison Gilbert / Lois F. Akner, moderator Former Queens Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro was the first female major-party vice-presidential candidate. Ferraro’s father died of a heart attack when she was eight. Her mother died of emphysema in 1990. Actress Mariel Hemingway is the granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Woody Allen’s Manhattan.

Hope Edelman is the author of the bestseller Motherless Daughters and its companion, Letters from Motherless Daughters. Her latest book is Motherless Mothers. She lectures extensively on coping with loss. Allison Gilbert is a producer of CNN’s American Morning. An Emmy Award-winning investigative producer, she wrote Always Too Soon: Support for Those Who Have Lost Both Parents. Lois F. Akner, CSW, is a psychotherapist specializing in family counseling who runs the 92nd Street Y workshop Losing a Parent Is Hard at Any Age. She is the author of How to Survive the Loss of a Parent: A Guide for Adults.
