August 8 7:00pm (Das Leben der Anderen) von Donnersmarck Germany 2006 (R) 2hr.17min. Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film 2006 as well as many other prestigious awards, this political thriller and human drama begins in East Berlin in 1984, five years before Glasnost and the fall of the Berlin wall. It ultimately takes us to 1991 and what is now reunited Germany. The film traces the gradual disillusionment of Captain Gerd Wiesler, a highly skilled officer who works for the Stasi, East Germany’s powerful secret police. His mission is to spy on a celebrated writer and actress couple. Von Donnersmarck’s movie debut focuses on the horrifying, gripping and sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany.
