Africa: Conversations with a Continent: Mali

Wed 10 Oct. 1395 Lexington Avenue, New York, 10128. 212-415-5500. 92nd Street Y - [email][events]

New Yorkers interact with people from Africa on a daily basis, yet most know very little about the countries from which they come. In this series, speakers from various walks of life introduce their countries from different perspectives. Each session fosters a dialogue among audience members, scholars, artists, policymakers and Africans living in the United States, helping participants understand the richness and diversity of Africa and the ways in which Africans in New York see the challenges facing their countries.

Mali
New Yorkers only became conscious of the substantial local Malian community after the tragic 2007 Bronx blaze. Few realize that it is nearly twice the size of Texas and that it was home to the great medieval empires of Ghana, Mali and Songhai. Fabled Timbuktu was a hub of trans-Saharan trade and a center for Islamic scholarship. Mali’s glorious past is very much part of its national consciousness and inspires contemporary artistic excellence.

Co-presented with the Museum for African Art.
