The Jewish Learning Institute’s (JLI) fall course, Israel: The Land and the Spirit, begins at Lubavitch Chabad of Skokie on November 1, 2007. While many Israel-focused courses traditionally cover the history and politics of the State of Israel, The Land and the Spirit will explore the nature of the deep spiritual connection that has existed between the Jewish people and the land of Israel throughout the ages. Employing a range of texts from various sources, including religious and secular texts, Talmudic quotes, and op-ed pieces and other contemporary scholars, students will broach and discuss topics including: What it means for a land to be holy, how the land could have been promised to the Jews before they existed as a nation, and whether it’s possible
