Rabbi Benji Samuels: While Standing on One Foot: Rabbinic Visions of the Essence of Judaism Rabbinic Judaism is known for its intricate debates, fine distinctions and detailed laws, but what of its broad vision? In this study session, we will look at Talmudic texts that aspire to an essentialist understanding of Judaism. Rabbi Benjamin J. Samuels is the spiritual leader of Congregation Shaarei Tefillah, a modern Orthodox synagogue in Newton Center. He is also a Genesis Scholar at CJP, a Me’ah, Ikkarim, and Ma'ayan instructor, and a doctoral student at Boston University in the Science, Philosophy and Religion program.
