Leading scholar Omer Bartov embarks upon some twenty Ukrainian towns—including his mother’s hometown of Buchach—to uncover the remains of this missing Jewish history. Ultimately, he finds that Ukraine, with its ethnically cleansed population, has reinvented its past by suppressing the bystanders’ collective memory of the country’s victims.
