With content ripped straight from today's headlines, this course explores militaristic and pacifist ideologies in Jewish sources, and analyzes the ways in which modern religious authorities and commentaries have used these in relation to the wars of the State of Israel. Ethical dilemmas will be discussed including the bombing of areas in which it is suspected civilians are harboring terrorists, pre-emptive strikes, and the balance between human rights and security.
