Please reserve by February 25 to guarantee a lunch. We associate Franz Kafka, a literary genius of the twentieth century, with existential questions, cosmopolitan cultures, and universalistic concerns. This four-session course introduces students to a different Kafka—a fan of Yiddish theater and a self-taught student of Judaic classical texts, concerned with Jewish mysticism, Hasidism, and Kabbalah. We will delve into Kafka's narratives, contextualizing them against the backdrop of his intellectual engagement with Judaism. Through excerpts of his letters, short stories, and novels, we will encounter
