We associate Franz Kafka, a literary genius of the twentieth century, with existential questions, cosmopolitan cultures, and universalistic concerns. This four-session course introduces students to a different Kafka—a fan of Yiddish theater and a self-taught student of Judaic classical texts, concerned with Jewish mysticism, Hasidism, and Kabbalah. We will delve into Kafka's narratives, contextualizing them against the backdrop of his intellectual engagement with Judaism.
