This course investigates the history of women's Torah commentary, drawing from the just-released, groundbreaking publication The Torah: A Women's Commentary. Each session combines discussion of biblical texts with consideration of how commentary frames the meaning of the Torah itself. Topics include feminist biblical interpretation, Yiddish commentary, Jewish women's midrash, and the implications of a Torah commentary entirely by women.

Dr. Rachel Havrelock is a Hebrew Bible scholar specializing in gender and women in the Bible. She received her PhD in Jewish Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and teaches in the Program in Jewish Studies and Department of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is co-author of Women on the Biblical Road and a proud contributor to The Torah: A Women's Commentary.
