Africa: Conversations with a Continent: Island of Madagascar

Thu 1 May, 7-9 pm. 1395 Lexington Avenue, New York, 10128. 212-415-5500. 92nd Street Y - [email][events]

The island of Madagascar, the fourth largest in the world, separated from the African continent millennia ago and is filled with plants and animals (like lemurs) which exist nowhere else. Culturally, Madagascar is very complex as the result of separate waves of immigration from Malaysia, the Middle East and the African continent. Superimposed on these cultures is French influence resulting from colonization. Since independence, the political situation has been extremely fluid. Madagascar is often cited as an example of ecological destruction. Co-presented with the Museum for African Art. $20 for Museum for African Art members. Museum members please call 212.415.5500 to order. Watch video of lemurs and other wildlife in Madagascar on the 92Y Blog. Date & T
