07:00 PM - 08:30 PM Shachar Hadassah July Program with Special Guest Peter Ascoli Peter Ascoli's recent biography of his grandfather, "Julius Rosenwald: The Man who Built Sears, Roebuck and Advanced the Cause of Black Education in the American South," was named one of the best books of 2006 by the Chicago Tribune.
But also contained within the 453 pages of this monumental book is the story of Ascoli's grandmother Augusta Nusbaum Rosenwald. "Gussie" married Julius in 1890, long before Richard Sears met Alvah Roebuck, but after Julius built his fortune, Gussie established herself as an activist and philanthropist in her own right. On July 16, Ascoli will tell us more about his grandmother, Gussie, and her support for the work of Jane Addams, Henrietta Szold, and many other notable women of her era.
