Der Dibuk (1937, Michael Waszynski) 123 minutes, 16mm Part of the Yiddish film series at Doc Films. Admission: $5 Betrothed before birth but separated by a father’s greed, a scholar and a maiden love each other with an intensity that is stronger than death. This classic film tells the story of a dybbuk, a spirit who possesses the body of his beloved. Inspired by an ethnographic expedition of Jewish life in Eastern Europe and inspired by interwar artistic movements, the Yiddish gothic film meticulously incorporates themes of money, social custom, and folklore in a parable of modernity.
