Mondays, December 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 12 noon to 1:30 pm (doors open 11:45 am) To many people today, Hanukkah is a joyous December holiday of lights, but it wasn’t always this way. The festival has changed over time, acquiring theological, mystical, political, and cultural significance from the time of the Maccabees to today. In four lunchtime sessions, participants will explore texts produced between the 2nd-century BCE and the 19th century CE and discover how Jews changed the meaning of Hanukkah.
Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern teaches Jewish history at Northwestern University. He holds PhDs in Comparative Literature from Moscow University and Jewish History from Brandeis University. He has been a Rothchild Fellow at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, a Visiting Scholar at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, a Fulbright Fellow at National Ukrainian University in Kyiv, and the Sensibar Visiting Professor at Spertus.
$150 | $125 for Spertus members
All sessions include a kosher lunch. Please reserve by November 20. Call 312.322.1773.
