Focus on Liberia’s special relationship to the United States. In the 19th century, former slaves from America emigrated to Liberia and became known as Americo-Liberians. Liberia’s indigenous population is composed of 16 different ethnic groups. There are also sizable numbers of Lebanese, Indians and other West African nationals. Liberia’s indigenous art forms include exterior murals, pottery, weaving, music and dance, and traditional wood sculpture, in particular.
