Mondays, September 14-November 9 (no class September 28), 7:00-10:00 p.m. (8 sessions) In a shared commitment to art education, the Skirball Cultural Center is pleased to partner with Otis College of Art and Design to bring art and writing classes to the Learning for Life program. Registration for this class occurs directly with Otis College; however, the class takes place at the Skirball.
Embroidery, the embellishment of fabric with needlework, is a universal artistic language requiring skillful technique. Considered a high art in many ancient cultures, embroidery today is championed by contemporary artists who are reclaiming the expressive and symbolic qualities of the art form. This course combines hands-on studio sessions with exclusive visits to several Los Angeles museums that house significant textile collections. Students will experience historic, regal, religious, and celebratory works first-hand, using them as inspiration for personal creative projects. Working meetings will include experimenting with a variety of complex techniques and materials, learning to transfer images to fabric, and developing individual works. Participants will receive personal attention for special skills and problem-solving.
Instructor: Susan Hill is a highly skilled textile artist and has worked with Los Angeles-based nonprofit arts organizations for more than thirty years. She co-developed the needlework of renowned artist Judy Chicago's masterpiece The Dinner Party, for which Hill researched historic techniques and led a team of needleworkers in the creation of embroidered table runners. Hill holds a BA from Wellesley College.
