Embroidery, the embellishment of fabric with needlework, is a universal artistic language requiring skillful technique. Considered a high art in many ancient cultures, embroidery today is championed by contemporary artists who are reclaiming the expressive and symbolic qualities of the art form.
This course combines studio sessions with exclusive visits to several Los Angeles museums that house significant textile collections. Students will experience history, regal, religious, and celebratory works firsthand, using them as inspiration for personal creative projects. Hands-on meetings include experimenting with various techniques and materials, learning to transfer images to fabric, developing individual works. Participants will receive personal attention for special skills and problem-solving.
Instructor: Susan Hill is a highly skilled textile artist and has worked with Los Angeles-based nonprofit arts organizations for more than thirty years. She co-developed the needlework of renowned artist Judy Chicago's masterpiece The Dinner Party, for which Hill researched history techniques and led a team of needleworkers in the creation of embroidered table runners.
