Nantahala Camping and Kayaking Weekend w/ Mosaic Club of Georgia (Adults only) When: Friday, June 11 – Sunday, June 13 What: Have you heard about our annual Nantahala Weekend? Head out of town on Friday afternoon, set up your tent, and get ready for fun with your Mosaic friends. There will be hiking, your choice of whitewater or flat water kayaking, or just hang out singing and schmoozing in the Nantahala Forest of beautiful western North Carolina.
Camping: This year we’re returning to the popular Appletree Campground near Andrews, NC, but, we're trying out a different site in the campground from the one we usually have. http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/appletree.pdf. The campground offers a picnic shelter and bath house with toilets and showers, so it isn’t totally roughing it. We’ll do cookouts and enjoy Shabbat under the stars. Your scrumptious weekend meals will include Friday Shabbat dinner through Sunday morning breakfast.
Hiking: Saturday we’ll hike in groups on one of the many local trails, which include both the Bartram and the Appalachian Trail. Easy/moderate and strenuous hikes will be planned depending on the ability levels of those who sign up. This year, we're again offering both whitewater and flat water kayaking. Both events take place on Sunday.
Rafting: For those who want to go whitewater kayaking, there's a guide-assisted kayak trip down the Nantahala River with our outfitter, the Nantahala Outdoor Center, www.noc.com. NOC provides the gear, which includes the inflatable kayak, or duckie, wetsuit, and paddle. As in the past, we’ll paddle down this fun dam-controlled river in our individual duckies after safety instruction by the outfitter. We’ll be on the river about 2-3 hours. This section of the Nantahala River is rated Class II, with a Class III rapid at the end, which all paddlers will have the option to go down or not. This is a guide-assisted trip, meaning we’ll have 1 guide for every 6 people to help us navigate down the river. Previous whitewater paddling experience is required, as this trip is not for beginners. Beginners may opt for a guided raft trip.
Kayaking: Our flat water option is paddling your own kayak on Lake Nantahala. We will paddle across the pristine lake water to Clear Creek Falls. Expect to finish around 3 PM. This flat water paddle will be guided by Margery Diamond. It is required that you bring your own equipment: flat water kayak, paddle, PFD, etc. There are no kayak rentals on site. A complete list of what you will need will be sent to those who choose this option. You may want to do your own thing on Sunday, such as hike, fish, take in a scenic drive or relax at the campground.
Cost: The cut-off date for the early bird rate is Monday, May 17 to get the early bird rates. Add $25 after May 17. Make your check payable to Mosaic Outdoor Club of Georgia.
