In the early years of the 20th century, Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta Cone began assembling what would become one of the world’s most outstanding collections of modern art. In Paris, they visited the studios of then little-known artists Matisse and Picasso and purchased bold, avant-garde works. Associate Curator Karen Levitov explores how the sisters amassed over 3,000 objects including masterpieces by Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin and van Gogh. Karen Levitov is curator of the exhibition Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore.
