Reasoned Judgment in the Wilderness

Wed 11 May, 7:30-9 pm. 1 South Franklin St., #230-825, Chicago, 60606. Laura Smith, 312-357-4851. Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago - [email][events]

The very beginnings of knowledge in Genesis suggest the conflict between the rational and the religious. Eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was an act of disobedience bringing death. Today, the clash is seen in the tension between science with its emphasis on empirical reason and religion with its recognition of a spiritual reality. Yet, Judaism lauds the use of the intellect through its insistence on the study of Torah above all else.

This lecture by JLJS scholar Dr. Ellen LeVee explores the Book of Numbers as it juxtaposes utilitarian rationalizations with reasoned judgments that recognize spiritual commitments. The lecture is free and open to all. Please visit the JLJS website for information on all of our programs.
