Ensuring Israel's Security By Achieving Peace: A Conversation with Colette Avital With ground shifting in the Middle East and crucial decisions on the horizon, Ambassador Colette Avital, former Deputy Speaker of the Knesset and former Israeli Cosul to New England, will speak about the urgency of a two-state solution to secure Israel's future as a Jewish, democratic homeland.

Ambassador Avital will address: How do the dynamics of the Arab Spring affect israel's prospect for peace and security? What should leaders do in advance of a likely September vote at the UN on Palestinian statehood? Does reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas make a peace agreement more or less feasible? Colette Avital was born in Romania and emigrated to Israel in 1950. She joined Israel's Foreign Ministry in 1960, eventually becoming Ambassador to Portugal, Consul General in NY and Consul in the New England area. Elected to the Knesset from 1999-2009, Avital served on a number of committees and later presided as Deputy-Speaker of the Knesset. She is the current Director General of the Educational Center at the Berl Katznelson Foundation, International Secretary of the Israel Labor Party, and board member of numerous organizations.
