Old Roots and New Branches: Jewish Music from Russia

Wed 9 Nov to Wed 7 Dec, 1:30-3 pm. 334 Amsterdam Avenue, New York. 646-505-5708. JCC in Manhattan - [email][events]

For better or worse, Russia has been a home for multitudes of Jews for many centuries. Revisit this history on a musical journey from a 19th century shtetl to the 1920s "Vitebsk Renaissance" of Marc Chagall and his fellow-artists; from the repressions of the 1930s and accusations in "dangerous formalism" against Shostakovich and his contemporaries to the blossoming of Jewish cultural and academic institutions in Russia and Ukraine today. Explore the story of former Soviet Union through the personal experience of Cantor Natasha Hirschhorn, a Kiev-born musicologist, composer and performer and Music Director of Congregation Ansche Chesed. Come prepared to listen and to sing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4 t
