JEWS AND JAZZ: From Satchmo to the Israeli Invasion

Sun 18 May, 3:30-5 pm. Society for Advancement of Judaism, 15 West 86th Street, New York, 10010. Michael Witkin, (212) 213-1002. The City Congregation for Humanistic Judaism - [email][events]

Wynton Marsalis has famously called jazz a "gumbo," and since the earliest days of that musical genre, Jews have been an important part of that recipe. From Louis Armstrong to Benny Goodman to Lee Konitz to John Zorn, Jews have been intimately involved in the development and promotion of jazz. TCC member Brett Gold, who has been listening to and playing jazz for over 45 years, will talk about the influence Jews have had on the development of jazz, from its beginnings in New Orleans to its contemporary incarnation as a world music. As part of presentation, he will be playing a number of rare recordings featuring Jewish musicians, composers and entrepreneurs. Be prepared to tap your feet.
