Matthew Barney: No Restraint by Alison Chernik (2006, 70 min.). Matthew Barney's latest film, Drawing Restraint 9, a collaboration with longtime partner Björk, involved 45,000 pounds of petroleum jelly, a factory whaling vessel off the coast of Nagasaki, and the imagery of Shinto marriage rites to create the "narrative sculpture" of a fantastical love story about ritual and transformation. Alison Chernik followed Barney to Japan to document the creation of his film, giving context to this remarkably complex work and Björk's ambient score, while documenting the filming of such a massive project. MFA members, seniors, and students $6; general admission $7.
