Understanding American Muslims: Asra Nomani, Mona Eltahawy and Altaf Husain Paul M. Barrett, moderator Who are our Muslim neighbors? What do they believe? How do they reconcile American Islam with Middle East and world politics? This panel explores American Islam at a pivotal time, examining ideologies and cultures, immigrants and native-born adherents, black and white converts, and those who are well integrated into the larger society and those who are alienated and extreme in their political views.
Asra Nomani is the author of Standing Alone in Mecca: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam. Mona Eltahawy is a columnist and member of the board of directors of the Progressive Muslim Union. Altaf Husain is a member of the executive committee of the Muslim Alliance in North America. He is the former president of the Muslim Students Association of the United States and Canada. Paul M. Barrett was a reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal for 18 years and currently directs the investigative reporting team at BusinessWeek. He is the author of American Islam and The Good Black: A True Story of Race in America.
