Acclaimed author and biographer Francine du Plessix Gray’s latest work, Them: A Memoir of Parents, explores the lives of her Russian mother, Tatiana Yakovleva, who, as a young woman, was known as the muse of famous Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. The book also examines Gray’s mother’s second husband, Alexander Liberman, the mastermind behind Vogue magazine and the Condé Nast publishing empire. She talks about these two extravagantly talented Russian émigrés who fled wartime Paris to come to New York. Other works by Gray include Soviet Women, Lovers and Tyrants and Simone Weil.
