Set sail for the summer adventure of a lifetime! In an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that Emile’s former wife was an island native and, unable to turn her back on her prejudices, refuses Emile’s proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, on the mysterious island Bali Ha’i, the native souvenir vendor Bloody Mary introduces the strapping Lt. Joe Cable to her beautiful daughter Liat and they fall in love. But Joe is plagued with the same fears as Nellie and denies himself the fulfillment of a happy future. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission, the consequences have profound implications for all. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950 and generally considered one of the greatest musicals of all time, South Pacific and a number of its songs, such as “Bali Ha’i,” “Younger than Springtime” and “Some Enchanted Evening,” have become worldwide standards. With great chorus numbers like “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame” or “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair,” there is something for everyone.
Parents should note that South Pacific contains mature content and should familiarize themselves with the story before signing their children up for this production. There is a 1958 film version starring Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi and a 2001 Disney television version starring Glenn Close available at most video rental stores.
